Outdoor lighting

Outdoor fittings fail for ordinary reasons

Water gets in through a poor gasket, insects fill the lens, the driver overheats in a sealed box, and a cheap plastic body goes yellow in one summer. Choose by IP rating, body material and mounting before you choose by wattage.
From Panasonic and Halonix we supply flood lights, street lights, bulkheads, wall lights and rope lights, and Swaaadle solar lights for places where there is no mains point.

Choosing well

How to pick an outdoor fitting

01

Read the IP rating

IP65 is dust tight and handles water jets, so use it where rain reaches the fitting. IP54 resists splashes and suits covered spots.
02

Look at the body

Die-cast aluminium sheds heat better than plastic. Plastic bodies should be fire retardant and UV stabilised, or they yellow and crack.
03

Think about the height

A fitting mounted higher covers a wider area but with less light on the ground. Raise the wattage if you raise the pole.
04

Mains or solar

Mains gives steady light every night. Solar suits places with no wiring, but size the panel and battery for the longest cloudy spell.
Common questions

Outdoor lighting questions

The 6 means no dust gets in. The 5 means it can take water jets from any direction. That is the rating to look for on anything exposed to rain.

A sensor switches the light on at dusk and off at dawn, so nobody has to remember. It suits compounds, lanes and parking areas.

Use a yellow bug lamp, like the Halonix Astron bug lamp 9W, on balconies and verandas. White light pulls in far more insects.
